Month: March 2014

Black moon, dark moon, where is your light…

You can’t see it, but it’s there.

Well, if you have a telescope, you might see it during daytime. It will look no different to any other dark moon; maybe a very thin ring or a sliver of a crescent.

Black moon is the name given to the second dark moon in a calendar month. It happens on average once every 2.67 years. The next occurrence (after 2014) will be on October 30th 2016

This year we have two of them. The first was on January 30th, the second on March 30th. The last time there were two black moons in one year was in 1957. The next time will be in 2033, so if you miss it this time, you’re in for a long wait.

Most people are much better acquainted with the Blue Moon and the expression “once in a blue moon”, which means it happens rarely. The frequency of blue moon is the same as black moon – on average roughly once in 2 2/3 years.

Blue moon is pretty much the opposite of black moon. It occurs when there are two full moons in one month. Definitely more visible to the naked eye. August 31st  2012 was a blue moon, and the next one you can look forward to will be on July 31st 2015.

I know what you’re thinking. Yeah, great, a bunch of technicalities. You can’t even see a black moon, so who cares?

For pagans, it is pretty significant. The veils between the worlds are thin, like at Samhain and Litha. Yes, all the veils. In a way, it is a more powerful time than Samhain. Being the second black moon in one year, even that is amplified.

All magick workings are enhanced. I did a bit of banishing. It worked frighteningly well. Now I’m looking forward to the second black moon’s new moon, and the ultimate of all new beginnings.
